
Wales Cow and Heifer Numbers

Data is now sourced from the Cattle Tracing System (CTS) therefore categories and figures differ to those previously published. Cow numbers in Wales, similar to the rest of the UK have fallen over the last three years. Total dairy cow numbers for 2007 show a fall of 2.2% from the previous year to 395,000, this is also a fall of 5.7% between 2004 and 2007.
The biggest fall between 2006 and 2007 was seen in dairy females between the age of one and two years, which saw a fall of 5.6% from 54,000 in 2006 to 51,000 in 2007. However, dairy calves under a year saw a rise of 5.8%, 3,000 cows, to 55,000.
