The way in which we publish consumer data from TNS has changed. To provide more useful data we have split TNS information into the following sections:

Each page will give a snapshot of the market in terms of volume and expenditure.

Sales of Filtered milk were up by 16.4% (37.5m litres) to 266.4m litres in the 52 weeks ending 13/07/08 compared to the previous year. Looking at various fat types, semi-skimmed milk has shown the biggest absolute year-on-year growth, up by 26.1m litres (18.9%) to 164.5m litres, which represents 61.7% of the filtered market. Skimmed and whole milk also showed good growth compared to the previous year, up by 21.0% (6.0m litres) and 8.8% (5.5m litres respectively).

Expenditure on filtered milk was also up on the previous year, whole milk stood at £43.5m, 19.2% more than the previous year. Semi-skimmed milk expenditure increased by 31.2% (£25.5m) to £107.3m, with skimmed milk expenditure totalling £21.7m, 34.2% more than the previous year.

Filtered milk offers an extended shelf life through the manufacturing process.  Before milk is pasteurised, it is sent through various filters to take out bacteria.  According to Cravendale each filter comprises tubes that are 1/50th of a hair’s width.

Notes to Data

  • The tables on this sheet show the expenditure, volume, and average price of liquid milk sold in Great Britain over the last 52-week period.  Please note that the price differentials for different fat levels of milk are probably due to different purchase pack size trends.  A degree of caution needs to be taken with these figures as with all market data.
  • All % changes are based on year on year change.
