Milk Link and First Milk, Britain’s two leading farmer-owned dairy businesses have confirmed they are in talks about a possible merger. The rationale for the merger is to create an organisation that will deliver enhanced and sustainable returns to its members through an increased ability to add value and secure profitable markets for its milk and milk products.
As part of the merger process due diligence work has commenced and is expected to take a number of weeks. Once the work is completed the boards of both businesses will decide whether to recommend a merger. Any merger would be subject to approval by the Office of Fair Trading and members of both organisations. Both organisations believe that coming together generates the opportunity to create a world class, British farmer-owned dairy business, with the scale, expertise and ambition to compete globally.
Milk Link and First Milk have a combined turnover of over £1 billion, handle 3 billion litres of milk per year and are owned by 4,250 dairy farmers in England, Wales and Scotland. Both businesses are said to be complementary in terms of membership bases, processing assets, positions in key markets and customers.
