Monthly EU Milk Deliveries
Note: Figures from January 2007 no longer include Malta's milk delivery data, however it is estimated they only produce around 3,000 - 6,000 tonnes per month which would not substantially affect the percentage increase shown.
EU milk delivery figures for March 2008 show an increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year.
Milk deliveries for the first month of the 2007/08 milk year were 1.5% (11.6 million tonnes) above the previous year, with milk deliveries in May through to November 2007 showing a fall in production when compared to the previous year. Deliveries from December 2007 to March 2008 then saw an increase when compared to the previous year. February 2008 saw the largest single month increase of 6.6% compared to the previous February, this has helped the EU 25 to deliver 131.6 million tonnes of milk to dairies in 2007/08, 337,000 tonnes - 0.26% more than in 2006/07.
Milk deliveries in December to March increased 2.5% to 33.9 million tonnes, when compared to the previous year. Farmers in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland and particularly France all appear to have responded to market signals by increasing their production – by extending the number of days in a lactation that a cow is milked for, postponing the culling of cows and feeding more concentrate. The UK and Italy are the only countries among the biggest producers to have experienced a fall in milk deliveries.
According to DG-Agri figures, most EU milk prices increased between 26% and 76% between March 2007 and March 2008. Prices are starting to fall, with the average EU 25 milk price for March 2008 at 27.78ppl a fall of 0.7% from February. Some EU states have seen farmgate prices fall more dramatically, an example is Germany which has seen the average price fall from 26.95ppl in February to 26.53ppl in March, a fall of 1.6%. In this particular country the falling milk price received while input costs continue to increase has led to many farmers striking. For more information on EU milk prices click here.
