Figures have been provided by the RPA which give butterfat adjusted deliveries of 13,661 million litres for 2006/07. Taking into account permanent and predicted temporary conversions, this puts the UK at 409.5 million litres under quota, 53.8% more than the previous year. This deficit is 143.5 million litres greater than 2005/06 and the largest deficit seen in over a decade. Milk prices and poor weather has been blamed with cows being housed for longer and silage quality not being as good as expected. In addition, cow numbers have fallen this year while average yield has remained relatively stable compared to the previous year.
Although it is very early in the quota year, poor weather conditions have already affected milk production. With quota increasing by a further 0.5% to 14,201.0 million litres, it will be difficult for the UK to reach quota in 2007/08. Click here for monthly production figures.

Quota Position by Region
The table below shows each regions position relative to quota for 2005/06 and 2006/07. As would be expected, most regions finished well below respective quotas. However, there have been four exceptions; Cumbria, North West, Scotland and Northern Ireland who were over quota by 0.01, 0.48, 3.29 and 4.04% respectively. In Northern Ireland, production has continued to increase over the last few years and as the rest of the UK continues to be under quota, Northern Ireland does not get hit by superlevy.
The 2006/07 figures show that production has decreased further with the UK quota position reduced from -1.8% to -3.11%, this is a fall of over 191/million litres to -437/million litres. The biggest fall is in Greater Manchester, where the quota postion fell from -1.6/million litres to -3.6/million litres, this was a percentage fall from -5.6% to -12.07%.
